Taking my bike in for a tune up today so I have mounted it on my roof for the first time. Getting it up there is pretty easy since it’s plenty light. Took me a bit to figure out how to assemble the rack but now it should be easy in the future. I added some bungee cords to help stabilize the side to side movement but otherwise it seems pretty secure. I drove much more cautiously than usual but that’s because usual is tire screeching around turns and near full force braking down the hill. The bike didn’t fall off so mission success!
I replaced the rear derailer, rear cassette, and the chain. This required a couple of specialty tools and following some YouTube videos to figure it out. But it was rather straightforward maintenance. I didn’t get the rear derailer dialed in correctly but it’s going in for a tune up so they will be adjusting that anyways. I’ll also have the brakes bled so when I get it back it should be nearly as good as new. I could probably use some new cables and the front derailer and front cassette (or whatever it’s called) and pedals, but those are lower priority.
Looking forward to my next ride!

I wouldn’t worry about the side to side movement. These racks are plenty solid. I’ve been off-road with these racks. They’ll shimmy but they aren’t going anywhere.

Yeah it was just hard to feel good about the shimmy, it seemed flimsy because of it. Once I get more used to it I guess I'll trust it more. I just like things on my roof to not move at all. I always give things a nice shake and if I can't rock the car's suspension by holding what's on the roof, it's not on there tight enough. But I supposed this thing is designed to move around a bit and not fall off.

Thats the gist of it. You don’t necessarily want all the loads transferr ed to the bike. Mostly these aren’t the most modern racks but I have broken a a fork using a more rigid mount in a trailer. These are way less hard on the bike.

I’m with you on the side to side movement. It’s unsettling. That’s why i had preferred fork-mount bike carriers.
It’s not really convenient to do that these days with thru-axles and and 10 different standards for hub widths. Finding specialized bike carriers or adapters for adapters is a pain in the butt and ultimately less secure.
A little sway is ok. it’s not going anywhere.

I’m more concerned about Canyon carving with it up there swaying around. If its moving around then its got added momentum when adding Gs. But it’s of value to just not drive so hard if the bike is up there.
And yeah I wanted to do a fork mount because it's so much cheaper and lowers the clearance height a bit. But with the disc brakes it would have been annoying to do. Plus this mount was pretty cheap (sub $100) but had numerous great reviews regarding using it in high winds for many years reliably. The only noted issues were rust which I don't ever have to face in socal lol

Probably ok for canyon carving. If you’re blasting through Angeles Crest, maybe don’t hug the wall too tight on the RH side so you don’t clip the bars??
Or center the bike on the roof...?

Nice! What bike mount is that? I need to get one for the Alltrack.

Glad to see you took on the maintenan ce yourself. It’s a good idea to go back and check your work after your next ride. Sometimes things get loose.
The front gears are called chainrings and those are mounted on the cranks. You can replaced a single ring if it’s worn. The big ring usually gets beat up from bashing rocks and logs. The middle ring usually gets worn out from pedaling. I can’t say I’ve ever seen anyone wear out a granny gear.

If I Centered the bike it would be even harder to get it up there. And with the ski rack on the other side it would be a problem too.

Rooftop bike racks make me nervous. I’ve used them before, but I don’t like them. It’s probably fine, but the side to side movement gives me anxiety, especially at highway speed. Give me a hitch mounted rack any day!

Yes. Lots of Honzo love over here. Between me and the 2 guys I ride with, there are 3 steel Honzo’s and 2 Carbonzo’s.
It’s such a great bike.

I didn't want to go through a hitch install nor spend the money on it, since I already have the roof rack. It's pretty stable with the extra bungees so I'm happy for now. If my bike was heavier I might be singing a different story though.

Carbonzos...love it! I ride a 2018 AL/DR. I agree it’s a really good bike, I’d like to get a full suspension one day but the Honzo is honesty all I need.
The only thing I really find myself wanting to change is the fork. Maybe a speedier rear tire.
